Most practical language to learn if you want to study in Northern Europe?

I want to go to school in Northern Europe in th future, possibly Germany or Sweden, and I know English and some french. What language would be practical for me to start learning now that would allow me to understand a more specific dialect later? Are there any common languages that people throughout Northern Europe speak? What would make the most sense? explanation? Thanks :)
